Clarinda Afghan

This afghan measures 48”x 68” and is made of custom 2 ½ layer 100% preshrunk cotton.   It makes a wonderful cherished keepsake depicting eight of Clarinda’s rich historical assets.

The afghan features a picture of each of the following:

  • Glenn Miller Birthplace Home: The birthplace home of Big Band Leader, Alton Glenn Miller, was restored to its original state and is visited by people from all over the world.  Clarinda hosts a four-day Glenn Miller Festival in June to commemorate his life and music.
  • Birthplace of 4-H: Clarinda is the birthplace of 4-H.  The schoolhouse where Jessie Field Shambaugh started what is now known as 4-H, is located at the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum in Clarinda.
  • Clarinda As: College baseball players come from all over the U.S. to play summer collegiate baseball with the Clarinda A's in Clarinda, Iowa.  This unique program places the players in the homes of local families.  The Clarinda A's team has played since 1955 and gives the players a taste of minor league ball while playing the M.I.N.K. league.
  • Page County Courthouse: The courthouse was built in 1885 and was restored after a devastating fire in 1991.  This historic courthouse is encompassed by Clarinda's downtown square.
  • Clarinda Cardinals: Clarinda School mascot.
  • Clarinda Treatment Complex: This building was once known as the longest building under one continuous roof until the Pentagon was built. This building was built with many windows, the belief being, even back then, that that sunshine had healing powers for depression.   The CTC has a museum that preserves the heritage of the complex.
  • Clarinda Eagles - Clarinda Academy School mascot.
  • Brokaw FFA Chapter House: The Brokaw FFA Chapter House is probably the only FFA chapter house of it kind in the U.S.  Built by the FFA boys in 1941 from blasted rocks and rocks from creek beds in the area.  It showcases a stone fireplace; recreation room and shuffleboard courts were designed in the floor.  The FFA members did all carpentry work.

The proceeds for the sale of the afghans go to the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce
