History of the Greenfield Municipal Swimming Pool: The Greenfield Municipal Swimming Pool was constructed during the summer of 1941 as a Works Projects Administration (WPA) project. The WPA was created by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidential order in 1935 and furnished $31,000 of the funds needed for the Greenfield pool while the city matched $12,000 for the project’s completion. The pool opened in 1942 and one of the first year’s lifeguards included native son Hugh Sidey who went on to be a Time magazine journalist who covered the White House for decades. Some of Sidey’s memories of the pool are included with the pool’s history enclosed in the gift box.
