Greenfield Carnegie Library Ornament
Description
Main Street Greenfield sponsored a limited series of the Greenfield Carnegie Library brass ornaments. The ornament measures 3 ¼ x 2 ½ inches and comes in a gift box with a ribbon and stand, making it perfect for the holidays or year-round display.
History of the Greenfield Carnegie Library: The women of the Greenfield Progress Club made a request in 1915 to the Andrew Carnegie Foundation to build a library. The city leaders were opposed to the project, so the Progress Club demanded the issue be put to public vote. Even though Iowa would not give women the right to vote for four more years, the women of the club persuaded the city leaders to let women vote in the election, and the issue passed. The women voted 180-68 for and the men voted 158-124 against. Architect Lloyd Willis of Omaha designed the colonial revival structure and Greenfield’s first public library was built in 1916. The library moved to a new facility across the street in the mid-1990’s and the community is working to restore the building as a gateway to its community and town square.
